SMART Howard House in Oxford
SMART Howard House is a unique, publically funded, 10 bed residential drug and alcohol detoxification service for residents of Oxfordshire. The project opened in 2010 and is named after our long-standing Trustee, Mike Howard.
COVID-19 – Changes to SMART Howard House Services
Staff are putting additional measures in place to protect existing residents and prevent transmission of COVID-19 from staff and community visitors. This means that visitors to the unit have been restricted, including sub-contractors and family and friends. We are working with residents to ensure they continue to receive safe and effective care.

- Dependent on drugs or alcohol and require a medical detox
- Willing to fully participate in the programme and activities provided

How does the programme work?
You will stay with us for up to 14 weeks to complete a medically supported detoxification. Through your stay you will:
- Have your own bedroom and a dedicated worker to guide, motivate and support you
- Have support from our doctor and nurse to plan your detox
- Attend groups using a range of recovery approaches
- Have access to therapeutic and fun activities, such as art, yoga, acupuncture, massage and recreational outings with fellow residents

Residents frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay for my stay?
You will need to pay a service charge toward the cost of your stay, most residents find this is covered by their benefits.
Can I go out on my own?
No, however there are lots of group outings and you will be accompanied whenever you need to attend appointments or leave the house.
Can I smoke?
Smoking is allowed in designated areas and if you would like to stop smoking we can help.
Can I see and speak to my family?
We know that contact with family and friends is important. After a brief settling in period, you will have access to regular calls and visits. We will be flexible for those who need to stay in contact with their children.
What can I bring?
You will need a few changes of clothes (including swimwear and gym clothes) and toiletries. You can bring photos and small belongings to make you bedroom homely. Any prescribed medication from your GP will be kept and administered by staff.
What can’t I bring in?
You will be asked to hand in your money, bank cards, mobile phone and other electronic devices on arrival. These will be kept safe and returned to you when you leave.
