SMART Prebend Centre
COVID-19 – Temporary closure of the SMART Prebend Centre
Following the latest government advice, the centre is currently closed. We have also closed the Somewhere Safe to Stay Hubs in Bedford and Milton Keynes. Working closely with Bedford Council, we have been able to secure hotel accommodation for our registered rough sleepers, so that our service users can self-isolate and keep safe. Our staff, volunteers and partners continue to provide as much support as possible to those who need help during this most challenging time.
About SMART Prebend Centre
The SMART Prebend Centre provides facilities, support and guidance; to relieve rough sleeping and to prevent further homelessness.
The day centre in Bedford is open every day of the year, supporting those who sleep rough, are vulnerably housed and often face issues around social isolation and exclusion. It is funded entirely on charitable donations and grants and the support of the local community; it is a place of safety, meeting the basic needs of service users; providing food, warmth, water, a place to get clean and rest.
It costs approximately £250,000 per annum to keep the project open. We generate all funds for the centre through fundraising activities. Our volunteers and fundraisers are a vital part of keeping the service going.
What we do there
Every day of the year we provide vital facilities and services including:
- Breakfast, lunch and emergency food packs
- Showers and toiletries
- Phone and postal services
- Advocacy and signposting
- Clinics provided by nurses, chiropodists and vets
SMART Prebend Centre is a drop-in service, so referrals are not necessary. If you are a professional and wish to discuss a client that you have signposted to the Centre, then please call, and we’ll be happy to help.
