Unsafe rented homes are being targeted under new government powers.

From 22 June 2026, councils can issue fines of up to £7,000 where landlords fail to fix serious hazards in private rented homes. These hazards include severe damp and mould, faulty electrics, fire risks, freezing conditions, structural problems and unsafe layouts.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government says around 10% of private rented homes are estimated to have at least one serious health and safety hazard.

Everyone deserves a safe place to live. For people already facing poverty, poor health, unstable housing or the risk of homelessness, unsafe accommodation can make an already difficult situation even worse.

Stronger action on dangerous rented homes is welcome, but it must be backed by local enforcement, advice and support so that people know their rights and feel able to speak up.

No one should have to live in a home that puts their health at risk.
