As many of our supporters will already know, each year SMART holds a Winter Appeal called Cold Relief in Bedford (CRIB). This year we are aiming to raise £60,000 to help people in our town who are facing or already experiencing homelessness – the situation has never been more critical.
Help us to prevent homelessness
It is a sad reality that the cost-of-living-crisis is far from over. More than ever, people are struggling to stay on top of everyday costs such as rent and bills. Sadly, it means that the number of people rough sleeping or facing homelessness is on the increase, as people are can no longer afford their homes. You’ve probably seen people sleeping rough in Bedford. People can be found sleeping in doorways, tents, in their car and in multistorey car parks – desperate to find warmth. Our Support Hub on Prebend Street remains busy with people in need of urgent support. The Centre also acts as a doorway to other support services that are crucial.
About the Prebend Support Hub
SMART provides critical support for people; housing advice, finance support, navigating the benefits system, liaising with landlords and looking for alternative housing options. While being supported, people accessing the Centre can have a hot meal, get fresh clothing, have a hot shower, see the GP & nurse in the drop-in clinics and support with substance use.
Like many other charities, we are really feeling the struggle of rising costs. Coupled with this, the increasing need of our services as more people face housing difficulties makes each year more challenging… It’s now costing us £234,000 a year to run the Centre and provide the support needed.
