Help us to end homelessness one person at a time.

Disability Pride Month starts this week

Disability Pride Month began in Boston, USA, in 1990, the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed. Since then, it has grown into a global movement.

It is a time to recognise disabled peopleโ€™s experiences, rights, resilience and achievements. It is also a reminder that society still places too many barriers in the way of people who need support.

Homelessness and disability are closely connected. Many people experiencing homelessness are also living with physical health conditions, mental health challenges, learning disabilities, long-term illness or trauma.

For someone without a safe place, managing health, appointments, medication, mobility, benefits, paperwork and daily routines can become even harder.

At SMART, we see the whole person. We know homelessness is not just about housing. It is connected to health, poverty, trauma, isolation, accessibility and whether people can get the right support at the right time.

This Disability Pride Month, we stand for dignity, inclusion and support that meets people where they are.

Everyone deserves safety, respect and a place to call home.
