About Somewhere Safe to Stay

Somewhere Safe to Stay Hub in Milton Keynes is open 24 hours a day, offering emergency homelessness advice and somewhere safe to stay for a short time. The project provides a variety of professional support services to help people find the best way back into a settled home.

Who is eligible to use the Hub?

  •  Rough sleepers who are known to SMART’s outreach team (Milton Keynes Initiative Team)
  • Low to medium risk prison releases that have not been found a suitable accommodation offer before discharge
  • Low to medium risk hospital discharges that have not been found suitable accommodation offer prior to discharge and would otherwise return to rough sleeping

How to access the Hub

People who are rough sleeping or are at imminent risk of homelessness are referred by:

  • Milton Keynes Hospital, via Milton Keynes Council Housing Officer’s (‘Navigators’)
  • Prison releases, via Milton Keynes Navigators
  • Milton Keynes Initiative Team (outreach team)

What support is available?

Once referred to the Hub, rough sleepers and those at direct risk of becoming homeless are assigned a Navigator, and a SMART support worker who will be their continued point of contact throughout their journey into settled accommodation and independence. Navigator’s help with all aspects of the journey to finding a home, including information about rights, help with finding the best support services and finding the right housing solution. The SMART support worker will assist those using the service with additional needs, including help with drug and alcohol use, budgeting, benefits applications and emergency accommodation & access to medical services.

Clear goals

The overarching aims of the Hub are to:

  • Provide a welcoming environment to receive both statutory and third sector support in one place
  • Provide a space for current rough sleepers to be safe and warm overnight, while encouraging routine and promoting engagement with action plans to end their rough sleeping.
  • Prevent further rough sleeping

Working together for better results

SMART work in partnership with the Council and its partners to provide outreach support and to encourage those who are most vulnerable to accept help and accommodation.

The Hub has been made possible following a successful bid by the Council to the Government, with over £450,000 awarded to deliver the service, alongside four ‘Navigators’.

This work has also been supported by funding from MK Community Foundation.
