Needle exchange and naloxone news!

The SMART Wokingham team are very excited to announce that from the 3rd April 2017 they will provide a fixed site needle exchange from within the service whilst continuing to support local pharmacies to provide needle packs to their customers upon request.

SMART Wokingham Service Manager Jacqui Fitzgerald comments “The new needle exchange will assist our service users to reduce the risk of contracting blood borne viruses thereby remaining healthy until they are ready and willing to cease injecting and ultimately, with the appropriate support, it is hoped they will achieve a drug-free life.

With this aim in mind, SMART will offer a wide variety of new and up to date equipment for service users to choose from and we will ensure the safe disposal of used equipment. SMART is also very keen to lower the risk of overdose therefore the needle exchange will provide and encourage the use of  Naloxone  by our service users.

Introducing the a needle exchange, as an integral part of the Wokingham provision, will provide an important opportunity to deliver a discreet harm reduction approach in a safe and confidential setting and to reach out to those within the community who may otherwise hesitate to access our service.”
