People experiencing homelessness in England will be offered free NHS flu vaccinations from autumn 2026, following new government guidance.

The offer will include people sleeping rough, as well as those staying in homeless hostels and night shelters. This is an important step, recognising that homelessness is not only a housing issue, but also a serious health issue.

People experiencing homelessness often face higher risks from flu and other respiratory illnesses. Many are already dealing with poor health, long-term conditions, cold weather, poor nutrition, and the daily pressures of crisis. At the same time, accessing healthcare can be difficult, especially for those without a permanent address, transport, or regular contact with services.

At SMART, we welcome this announcement. Preventative healthcare can make a real difference, helping to reduce serious illness, hospital admissions and pressure on emergency services.

For this to work well, access will be key. Vaccinations must be easy to reach and delivered through trusted places, including day centres, hostels, night shelters and outreach services.
