Pumpkin carving, cake baking and kokedama making!

On 18th October 2017 The SMART Prebend Centre celebrated their new service with an awesome Open Day.

Sue Flynn (Centre Manger) and the team were delighted to see so many people from the local community come along to find out about the service and SMART’s plans for the future.

We were lucky enough to have The High Sheriff Of Bedfordshire in attendance who did a fantastic job of choosing the winner of the SMART bake off. The competition was fierce!

Pictured above is Jo from The SMART Prebend team (winner of the bake off) being congratulated by The High Sheriff Of Bedfordshire, Mr Vinod Tailor, who commented “the cake is not only beautifully decorated, but delicious too!”

We’d like to offer thanks to Labour Councillor Luigi Reale for judging the pumpkin carving competition. The winning pumpkin and Councillor Reale can be seen pictured below.

Congratulations to Robert who carved the winning pumpkin. SMART’s Area Manager for Bedford Lisa Harrison was delighted to present Robert with a gift voucher for his super spooky pumpkin!

Councillor Reale was also generous in donating £250 towards the cost of a much needed new commercial fridge (seen below) for the Centre. Cath Hoskins, SMART’s CEO joined Lisa to thank Councillor Reale for his kind donation!

The Together We Grow allotment and garden project were busy giving tutorials on how to make Kokedama (pictured below), a form of Japanese garden art where a moss ball is fixed to a platform or suspended from string with the plant growing out from the sphere.

Ben can been seen below, who is clearly very happy with his Kokedama creations! There are a few Kokedama left for sale (£5) at the Centre, call or pop to reception if you want to grab one before they are gone!

“I’d like to thank everyone who came to the Open Day. We received many generous donations and commitments towards future funding. We are blown away by the community spirit in Bedford and are very grateful for the incredible support we receive to keep the Centre running” Cath Hoskins, SMART CEO.

The High Sheriff Of Bedfordshire joins Cath in acknowledging Sally (one of the many volunteers at The SMART Prebend Centre) for her dedication and hard work.

The SMART Prebend Centre is open 365 days a year providing vital facilities, services and support homeless people, rough sleepers and vulnerably housed in Bedford.
