HomeRun for Beds: Run With us to Help End Homelessness in Bedford

Did you know that according to national statistics nearly 1,100 people in Bedford are homeless, including 200 children?

In reality, we suspect these numbers are much higher. People in our community are sofa surfing, living with friends, sleeping in their cars, and rough sleeping, the future they are facing is uncertain.

You Can Make a Difference – Join the Race to Help End Homelessness

To build on the success of last year we are recruiting for some wonderful and energetic people to take part in one of the races at the Bedford Running Festival whilst raising funds for SMART. There are several races that take place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September.

  • Family Fun 1 Mile: Perfect for families and beginners – this short run is a great way to get everyone involved.
  • 5K: Ideal if you are looking to achieve their first running milestone. Join us in the Couch to 5K challenge and make this your goal!
  • 10K: A step up for intermediate runners looking to push their limits.

Taking place on the 8th September

  • Half Marathon: For those ready to tackle a more demanding distance.
  • 20 Miles: The ultimate challenge for seasoned runners seeking to make a significant impact.

 Our Service Must Continue

In 2023 we supported more than 400 people at our Prebend Support Centre, preparing more than 8,000 meals alongside other essential services like showers, clean clothes and support to navigate the challenges that come along with not having a home or worrying that you might lose home. Our service is open to anyone living in Bedford, it’s free and we never refuse anyone support, regardless of their situation. The Support centre is not funded by the Government; we rely on the support of our community.

Join Us at the Starting Line

With mortgage defaults rising from 1% in 2022 to 5% in 2024, the number of people at risk of homelessness is growing. By joining us at the Bedford Running Festival, you can make a profound difference to people facing homelessness locally. Your participation not only helps raise vital funds but also spreads awareness and hope for a brighter future.

SMART will pay your entrance fee and book your place in exchange for your best effort to raise at least £200. 100% of what you will raise will be invested back into our services as our generous event sponsors have covered our costs for this activity.

Need Some Inspiration? Mark’s Story:

“My name is Mark, and I want to share my story in the hope that it will inspire you to participate in the Bedford Running Festival and support SMART.

A year ago, I was living in my car after my marriage fell apart. I was doing everything I could to hold down my job and provide for my children, but I ended up losing my home. The support I received from SMART was life-changing. They helped me find a place to stay and gave me access to showers and food, and most importantly, provided me with hope.

By participating in the Bedford Running Festival, you’re helping people like me rebuild their lives. Every step you take, every mile you run, helps SMART provide the support and resources needed to ensure that others don’t have to go through what I did.

Please sign up and run for SMART. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of many people in Bedford who are struggling with homelessness.”

We need you to get involved so we can help more people like Mark change their lives. Register Now!

Simply complete the form and we’ll send you a link to create your fundraising page. Once you’re all set up, we will pay to register you in the race of your choice. We just ask that you do your best to raise £200.
