SMART CJS IMPACT REPORT 2020: A YEAR OF CHANGES

A message from Anita McCallum – SMART CJS Chief Executive Officer…

We know that our services are needed more than ever as we learn to live with the longer-term effects of the pandemic as the toll taken on people reveals itself. In our Wokingham service, numbers increased by a third in 2020. In Bedford and Milton Keynes, our teams saw unprecedented numbers of people needing support.

HELPING PEOPLE TO HELP THEMSELVES

During 2020 we have helped at least 1500 individuals who have experienced rough sleeping and homelessness, and/or substance misuse. Many of the people who reach out for help are at their lowest ebb, in a state of despair and hopelessness. There have been hundreds of heartwarming success stories, some of which appear throughout the report. It’s testament to the compassion and commitment of our teams that they have worked tirelessly to provide a 24/7 service to those that desperately need it.

I’d like to draw your attention to page 18, where James shares his inspirational journey from being addicted to drugs and ready to ‘end it all’ to training to become a Support Worker at SMART Howard House…

THANK YOU TO OUR STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, TRUSTEES, SUPPORTERS & COMMISSIONERS

There have been enormous challenges during 2020, with many of our services needing to relocate as we have responded to an ever-changing landscape.

Our teams have shown unwavering commitment, turning up for shifts and putting the welfare of others above their own – they have literally been risking their lives.

42 regular volunteers gave 30,452 hours so that our workers could focus their time on people needing help.

Trustees (also volunteers) gave up their time and leant their expertise to help guide our charity and keep us on track.

More than 327 individuals and 52 groups raised thousands of pounds. More than 500 individuals and 52 groups have donated 1000s of items of clothing, toiletries and food.

Commissioners from local authorities work as supportive partners. They enable us to deliver, and continually improve our services.

My deepest thanks and gratitude to everyone who has played a part in helping us to help others in 2020.

I am looking forward to working with YOU and continuing to improve people’s lives and fortunes in 2021 and beyond.

Anita McCallum

Chief Executive Officer- SMART CJS
