SMART turns 20!

smart-team

This month SMART turned 20 years old. It’s safe to say that SMART has been through enormous change over the past 20 years and this will undoubtedly continue, such is the nature of our work. Through change comes growth; for our employees, our Services Users and our organisation.

What’s remarkable is that throughout immensely challenging times we continue to provide support and a safe space to some of the most vulnerable people in society. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who has made and continues to make this happen.

“SMART is all about relationships, caring about people, being with people, coming alongside them, and sticking with them, with shared values and concerns. There was some old guy years ago who summed everything up in a few words, the most important things in life are faith, hope, and love: but the most important of all is love. That is what, for me, however it may be put, SMART and life is all about.” Mike Howard – Co-Founder of SMART. Read the full article.

“SMART celebrates its 20 years’ birthday in the knowledge that it has helped thousands who have come through its doors, and we sincerely hope and expect that we will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of those who have experienced difficulties with addictive substances for another 20 years to come.” Shahin Bekhradnia – SMART’s Chair of Trustees.  “I’ve seen countless people getting stable and clean during the past 11 years, although sometimes this can be a long journey with service users, but we don’t give up! Happy 20th anniversary to SMART, a company that I am proud to be part of.  Long may we continue saving and changing people’s lives!” Simon Hayday – Residential Recovery Worker at SMART Howard House Detox Unit in Oxford. Read about Simon’s incredible journey with SMART.

“I’m proud to work for SMART because of the great work that we do, in particular our frontline work, we have incredible people in our organisation, we help people, we change people’s lives, this is more than a job for me. I’m very much looking forwards to the future.” Mary O’Byrne – SMART Support Services Manager. Read more from Mary.

“It’s funny to think that I have been working in the sector longer than SMART has. With so many challenges over the last 20 years SMART has shown extraordinary resilience. In 20 years we estimate SMART has made a real difference in the lives of more than 45,0000 people, something that we can be extremely proud of. This could not have been achieved without the hard work and dedication shown by everyone who has been involved in SMART along the way.” Jon Perry – SMART CEO
