We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help in our busy services and also our Head Office. Volunteering opportunities are diverse with positions currently available in Bedford, Oxford and Wokingham.
Hours are varied and can be flexible dependent on the position and location. If you think you may be able to help, it’s best to get in touch by completing the form at the bottom of this page.
Please check the locations of each of our buildings as most volunteering positions are for roles that require you to travel and work from within the service itself. Your travel will be reimbursed.
Due to the nature of our work you will be required to complete a DBS form (Disclosure and Baring Service) check for many of the volunteer positions. For these positions DBS clearance will be required before you commence working with us. We will pay for your DBS check.

SMART Support Services (Head Office) in Bedford
Support Services provides admin, HR and finance support for the charity. We need the following volunteers at Support Services:
General admin volunteer – duties could include general office work and admin e.g. answering the phone, responding to incoming emails and creation of word based documents. Some experience in working in an office environment is necessary.
HR volunteer – assist with quality assurance, audits and policy writing. Experience in HR is necessary.
Finance volunteer – working alongside the Finance Lead and helping with basic financial duties including data entry. Some finance experience is necessary.
Fundraising volunteer – help coordinate fundraising events and assist with grant applications. Some experience in fundraising is necessary.
Copy writer volunteer – help the Communications Manager to generate content for the website, social media and press releases. Experiencing in writing (preferably copy writing) is necessary. It is possible that you could work from home in this position.
Digital marketing volunteer – assist the Communications Manager to improve SMART’s online marketing and develop social media.
Graphic design volunteer – work with the Communications Manager to create designs for digital and more traditional promotional materials.
Personal Assistant support to the CEO – assist SMART’s CEO with general admin. This post could be remote or based in Thames Valley or Bedford. Hours can be flexible, but 3-4 hours a week would be ideal. Office and admin experience is necessary.
Volunteer Trainer – help to develop and or deliver SMART’s accredited training programmes and qualifications throughout the charity. Experience in training or teaching will be required in this role. DBS clearance may be required for this role.
SMART Prebend Centre in Bedford
The Centre is open 365 days a year providing vital facilities and services for the homeless and vulnerably housed in Bedford. We need the following volunteers at the SMART Prebend Centre:
General Volunteer – help with the day to day running of the centre. This could be on the reception desk, helping with our clothing stores, assisting in the dining area or even helping to process the food donations that we receive. This is a varied role and DBS clearance would be required.
Kitchen volunteer – assist the centre cook with meal preparation and clear up. You will need to complete a food hygiene certificate, which we will pay for. DBS clearance will be required.
Support volunteers – ideal for those interested in pursuing a career in social care; experience would be gained in assessment skills, and one-to-one working. You will be working directly with visitors to the centre. You will receive support, training and supervision. No experience is necessary, however you must be passionate about working and helping vulnerable people. DBS clearance will be required.
Admin volunteer – help the team with administrative tasks needed at the centre including replying to website enquiries, supporting the team to log client intervention records, sending out appeal letters or even thank you notes to our donators. DBS clearance may be required for this role.
Fundraising volunteer – help coordinate fundraising events, assist with grant writing (dependent on your experience) and collection of donations from local super markets and the local community. Some experience of fundraising would be beneficial, but not necessary.
Training Volunteer – help to develop and or deliver training programmes and qualifications at the centre. Experience in training or teaching will be required in this role. DBS clearance may be required for this role.
The Rough Sleeper Partnership (RSP) in Milton Keynes, Luton and Bedford
The RSP provides a combination of outreach support and assessment hubs where homeless people and people who are vulnerably house can go to access help and support. RSP operates across Milton Keynes, Luton and Bedford – there are volunteering opportunities in all these areas. RSP is a partnership between SMART, Signposts Luton, King’s Arm’s Project, and Open Door MK. We need the following volunteers at the RSP:
Outreach support volunteers – work alongside the RSP outreach workers by visiting and talking to rough sleepers. This role could include helping to plan and run events aimed at supporting rough sleepers. No previous experience is necessary, but you must be passionate about helping vulnerable people. DBS clearance will be required.
Hub volunteers – help the RSP team within one of the Assessment hubs. This role can be varied and could include completing assessments with homeless people, running small groups and helping the homeless and vulnerably housed find accommodation. No previous experience is necessary, but you must be passionate about helping vulnerable people. DBS clearance will be required.
SMART Wokingham provide community based drug and alcohol treatment for adults and young people in Wokingham. The service offers one-to-one recovery sessions, assessments, group activities, well-being clinics and a needle exchange. SMART Wokingham require the following volunteers:
Admin volunteer – help the team with administrative tasks needed at the centre including replying to website enquiries, assisting with fundraising, supporting the team to log client intervention records, sending out appeal letters or even thank you notes to our donators. DBS clearance may be required for this role.
Drop-in volunteer – working with the team to offer informal support to people both accessing and wishing to access SMART Wokingham. No experience necessary, but good listening skills and a friendly manner will be vital to this role. DBS clearance will be required.
SMART Howard House in Oxford
SMART Howard House provides residential treatment and alcohol/drug detoxification to residents in Oxford. The house has up to 12 residents, supported by a small team offering a mixture of one-to-one support and group activities. SMART Howard House require the following volunteers:
Volunteer Counsellor – offer counselling to residents staying in the house. You will need to be in your second year of a Level 4 Counselling diploma or be a qualified counsellor. You should have or be working towards membership of a professional body e.g. BACP. You should currently be receiving supervision. DBS clearance will be required.
