Volunteer Week 1st-7th June

Volunteers’ week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all volunteers who support us in all SMART services!

As part of our celebrating volunteer week we have been speaking to a couple of our current volunteers:

Chris has been a volunteer for SMART for 8 years now! He has been doing the same role for many years now where he helps to serve meals, makes tea and coffee and sorts all the donations from food to clothing. Chris got in to volunteering as he “heard about SMART through my local church and I wanted to help and give back to the local community.” Chris has done so much over the years for so many but recalls a special moment “whilst serving food to a client, I noticed that he did not have the basic necessities such as clothing and toiletries. I was able to support him by finding these items through the donations we receive. He was happy when I gave them to him and that made my day” Chris has himself benefitted from being a volunteer “it helps me to meet new people and have a regular routine.” Chris is a long-standing volunteer who we want to show some thanks to this volunteer week.

Gerry has been a volunteer at our Prebend Centre for the past 6 years! He first started with us as a kitchen assistant where he supported the kitchen team in preparing and making meals. Gerry got into volunteering for SMART because he “felt that the government weren’t doing enough to help support homeless people”. Over the years his role has changed and he is now working on meeting and greeting clients, taking in donations and sorting them as well as serving meals. Gerry has felt the benefit of volunteering saying “It makes me feel that I am doing something and making a difference to people’s lives.” Gerry is a long-standing volunteer who we want to show thanks to this volunteer week.
